Salt Lake County Community Exchange Time Bank

The Salt Lake County Community Exchange is a group of every day people that are committed to rebuilding the concept of community through mutual aid exchange to meet each other's needs

We look forward to getting to know you and helping you build a stronger connection with your community through our mutual aid program. As a member, you will be welcomed into a community of shared core values that prioritizes community over profit. We are a non-governmental, not for-profit effort that puts that power back with the people through service exchange opportunities.

Membership is always FREE and all skills, abilities, and people are welcome.

By joining us today, you are connecting with a network of neighbors that also believes that supporting one another is the best way to foster relationships, build trust, and give and receive resources.

You earn 1 hour of time for every 1 hour of help given in your community. Each hour you earn can be used to buy help from other members in your community. Learn more about how timebanking works here:

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Our 5 Core Values

 Human Value:

We recognize the intrinsic value of every human being regardless of race, creed, color, or station in life.

Human Equality:

We honor the presence of every living entity on this planet and consider that we are all equally important.

Human Partnership:

We believe that when we work together to meet each others needs, every human being will be cared for.

Human Reward:

We each apply ourselves to what we love. As members of the community we are honored to share in the proceeds of our collective activity.

Human Effort:

We honor the contribution of every human being equally, regardless of how slight or grand it may be.

We are passionate about intentional and ethical consumption practices

Exchange (SLCCE) creates a space where people come together on the basis of some shared need and exchange resources with each other, at NO COST, to cultivate solidarity and strengthen community.

The SLCCE is participatory, solving the issue of resource scarcity in the Salt Lake County area through collective action. Every 1 hour you put into your community earns 1 Time Dollar to be spent back into the community. It's your time and you get to choose how you spend it. This allows members to be intentional with the services they are giving and receiving. Giving when capacity allows and receiving when necessary.

Everyone's time is valued the same, regardless of the skills provided. Putting a higher value on someone's time based on their titles or credentials implies that some people are more valuable than others. SLCCE believes that no one person is more deserving than another in receiving services from their community members. Exchanging Time Dollars for services, based on time, establishes an equal value for all community members.

Mutual aid is a collective coordination to meet each other's needs, usually from an awareness that the systems that are currently in place are not going to meet them. The Salt Lake County Community Exchange (SLCCE) creates a space where people come together on the basis of some shared need and exchange resources with each other, at NO COST, to cultivate solidarity and strengthen community.

The SLCCE is a community-run system. We need a lot of people to do the work and make the decisions about the work together - that is why your membership is so important to your community!

The stronger we build our networks of neighbors now, the stronger we will be in the case of an individual or community crisis. Our existence is shared among voluntary members that are passionate about community care and equitable distribution of services through time exchange.

Salt Lake County Community Exchange came to be after reading the series "A Psalm for the Wild-Built" by Becky Chambers - a spark was lit that a community of care could exist where neighbors were helping neighbors. A few months later, a TikTok came across our feed talking about timebanking and the ball started rolling from there!

Communities around the world were already exchanging resources for time and supporting each other through time of crisis and instability. Salt Lake County could do the same!

HOW WE HELP

Current projects

So excited to share updates from our last community meeting! We are so grateful for the time, energy, and involvement of great time bank members that help to come up with ideas for fun events!
We are chatting event details in our Time Bank Signal chat - let us know if you want to join in on event planning and we will send you the link!...

Our Potluck and Produce Swap event is all wrapped up (like a meal to-go!) August was a tough month all around for everyone - and making time to get together over the weekend in this heat is difficult, we feel you 🥵

We had so much fun at our first community event last Sunday! The Swap Meet and Greet was the perfect place to swap items from household gadgets to games to clothing and crafts! But the best part of the day was swapping stories.

We're always so thankful for community showing up for community! Our meeting last Friday was a great chance to get to know each other, share some cool ideas, and hear about what brings us all to timebanking!
